Better Than Real Artificial Grass synthetic grass turf & sod believes that as with any home improvement, proper installation is required to achieve high quality visual results and durability. Better Than Real Artificial Grass synthetic grass turf & sod has design this easy installation guide as a reference tool for your installation of artificial synthetic grass turf & sod. Follow these 12 steps to perform your artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation.

STEP 1: know the potential installation area for artificial synthetic grass

– Mark the potential installation area for your artificial synthetic grass turf & sod. You can use a color spray can or small flags.

– Measure the length and width of the installation area in lineal ft (feet). The total squared area of artificial synthetic grass turf & sod will be required in SqFt (square feet)). Measure twice the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area before ordering the materials. Add an extra percentage of artificial synthetic grass turf & sod within the range of 8% to 10% of total area measured to cover any potential waste material.

– The objective of this step is to determine the type of artificial synthetic grass turf & sod to be installed and the total of quantity materials needed to do the entire project depending on the current surface and potential future use.

STEP 2: identify any irrigation, electrical cabling or gas piping system running through the artificial synthetic grass

– If an irrigation system exists in the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area, it should either be capped off or completely removed.

– If a cabling system exists in the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area, it should be relocated.

– If a piping system (water, gas, etc) exists in the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area, be careful when using nails, metal pins or sod staples, to avoid any damages to the pipes and also any possible hazard. Mark the path of the pipelines.

STEP 3: prepare the ground area for the synthetic artificial grass turf

– Install drainage systems if required. This preparation in the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation is similar to the drainage systems used in natural grass installations.

STEP 4: framing the prepared synthetic artificial grass turf

– Install the framing system around the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area according to the shape specified in the project specifications.
– Better Than Real Artificial Grass recommends to use synthetic bender boards 2” X 2” for the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area. Use metal pins or plastic stakes to attached the bender boards to the ground to avoid any shifting or loosening in the future. Once these bender boards are attached, they should not move easily from the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area.

STEP 5: laying decomposed granite on the synthetic artificial grass

– Lay out decomposed granite on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area surface already prepared and graded between 2” and 3” high.
– Spread the decomposed granite evenly through the entire prepared artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area.
– Use the back of a bow rake in a back and forth motion to level off the decomposed granite base on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area.

– You can use a 2’ X 4’ wood as a level to get rid of any holes or excess spots and distribute the compacted decomposed granite evenly on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.

– You can also rake out the surface evenly to the desired contour. Ensure that the decomposed granite base in the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area allows for proper drainage and water flow. The base material must be spread evenly across the entire artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area. This step will define the final shape and finish level for the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area.

STEP 6: compacting the decomposed granite base on the synthetic artificial grass

– Compact the already laid out decomposed granite on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area between 85% and 90% with a vibrating plate compactor. Vibrating plate compactors are available at most equipment rental stores.
– For proper compaction in the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area, spray water on the decomposed granite base. Also, this will help reduce the dust.
– Make as many passes as necessary to create a firm and hard base on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.
– Do not make sharp turns with the vibrating plate compactor; this will create ridges in the base of the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.

– High spots must be leveled off and low spots must be filled in and compacted on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.
– Use the hand tamper to compact any areas that were not compacted by the vibrating plate compactor on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.
– The smooth side of the trowel can be used to compact any build up around the edges and corners of the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area. Your goal is to create a smooth and uniform base on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area; the grass will not hide irregularities in the base of the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.
– The final base should be ½” below the top of the bender board or at the same level of the ground surrounding the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.
– Allow the compacted decomposed granite to dry on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area before proceeding to the next step.

STEP 7: installing a weed barrier on the synthetic artificial grass

– Install a layer of weed barrier over the compacted artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area to avoid the germination of weeds and also to stop any weeds from coming up through the drainage perforations in the synthetic artificial grass turf & sod backing (weeds are very sneaky).
– The weed barrier will help guarantee the proper drainage of the synthetic artificial grass turf & sod by keeping all the drainage perforations in the synthetic artificial grass turf & sod backing free and clear from any weed obstructions.
– Use sod staples or nails (6” long) to hold the weed barrier in place on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.
– Always remember where the pipes run through and the buried deepness under the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area  to avoid any damages and healthy hazards (gas or water pipes) when nailing or stapling on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area.

STEP 8: installing the synthetic artificial grass

– Pre-cut the synthetic artificial grass turf & sod. This cut area is slightly longer in length and width than the prepared base on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation area.
– Use the power broom to brush the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod fibers against the direction they are laying prior to installation of artificial synthetic grass turf & sod. This will make spreading infill much easier.
– When laying down pre-cut sections of artificial synthetic grass turf & sod, make sure all the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod pieces are laying in the same direction.
– Seaming the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod pieces. This is probably the most challenged step though the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod installation process. Proper seaming of two pieces of synthetic artificial grass turf & sod will show a professional installation once the project is finished.

Patience and self-control is required to do so.
– Before seaming the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod pieces make sure the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod fibers are laying in the same direction.
– Trim the synthetic artificial grass turf & sod to fit the installation area. The synthetic artificial grass turf & sod should fit tightly against the border. Take your time when trimming the installed artificial synthetic grass turf & sod.
– Once the perimeter of the installed artificial synthetic grass turf & sod has been trimmed, you can begin to secure the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod to the base. Insert either square head sod staples or nails (6” long) every 2ft along the perimeter of the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod, 1” away from the border. Spread the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod fibers apart when inserting the sod staples, do not staple down any artificial synthetic grass turf & sod fibers. Also, do not drive the staples down too far; this will create indentations in the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod.

STEP 9: infilling the synthetic artificial grass turf

– The infill material for the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod is either sand coated with rubber or crumbed rubber.
– Do not infill the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod until the seaming adhesive has been allowed to dry.
– Infill material required averages 1 ½ or 2 lbs. per squared foot of artificial synthetic grass turf & sod area.
– Spread the infill material over the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod. The infill can be distributed on the installed artificial synthetic grass turf & sod by using a drop spreader or broadcast with a shovel.

Begin brushing the infill material with a large nylon push broom or a power broom into the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod against the direction the fibers are laying causing them to stand upright. This step can be done easily with a power broom. A street broom can be used for corners and small areas. This process will be repeated several times until the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod has been filled leaving a free blade height of approximately 3/4” and the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod blades are completely standing up.
– The infill material makes the blades completely stand up, adds cushion and fills all the gaps in the bottom on the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod.

STEP 10: grooming the installed synthetic artificial grass turf

– Brush the finished installed synthetic artificial grass turf & sod again with a plastic brush to help the blades completely stand up. With the infill properly distributed throughout the synthetic artificial grass turf & sod, the blades look and feel like natural grass.
– After you have leveled the infill material, slightly water the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod to settle any infill particles that may remain on the surface of the installed artificial synthetic grass turf & sod.

STEP 11: cleaning up the synthetic artificial grass turf

– Walk through the artificial synthetic grass job site to remove and pick up any leftover artificial synthetic grass turf & sod remnants, materials, tools, equipment, etc. Pick up and dump all industrial and green waste materials according to the safety guidelines.
Note for homeowners: Periodically, brush the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod using a push broom. This will help stabilize the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod fibers, and keep the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod clean. Any spills that occur can be cleaned using a mild detergent and water. A plastic leaf rake or leaf blower can be used to remove any debris or foliage from the artificial synthetic grass turf & sod.
